Toyota South Africa Motors has raised the stakes once again with the GR Corolla, introducing a new eight-speed automatic transmission that blends everyday usability with the car’s uncompromising performance DNA.
The addition of the 8-speed Automatic (8AT) variant broadens the model’s appeal, offering convenience without diluting its motorsport-inspired character. Toyota’s GR Direct Automatic Transmission is engineered for track-focused driving, delivering rapid, precise shifts and anticipating driver inputs.
Paddle shifters, sequential shift functionality, and advanced safety systems such as Parking Support Brake and A/T oil temperature monitoring further enhance the driving experience.
Cooling has been optimised with an ATF cooler, sub-radiator and airflow ducting, while aerodynamics benefit from the removal of front fog lamps. Revised suspension geometry and rebound springs sharpen handling, and across the range, Torsen limited-slip differentials now come standard.
A tyre pressure monitoring system has been added, while the cabin gains GR gun metallic accents, a relocated iMT switch, and upgraded infotainment with blind-spot monitoring and Safe Exit Assist.

Under the bonnet, the GR Corolla retains its formidable 1.6-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine, producing 210kW and 400Nm. Coupled with Toyota’s GR-FOUR all-wheel-drive system, it delivers a top speed of 230km/h. Three selectable driving modes – Eco, Normal and Sport – ensure versatility, while the triple-exit exhaust reinforces its aggressive personality.
Pricing reflects the expanded line-up, with the GR Corolla MT at R985 200 and the new GR Corolla AT at R1 010 700.
This latest evolution of the GR Corolla proves that Toyota can deliver both thrilling performance and everyday usability, making the hot hatch an even more compelling choice for enthusiasts and practical drivers alike.
