The launch of BYD Finance in Houghton on 9 July represents a significant shift in how Absa views vehicle finance in South Africa. Instead of treating an electric vehicle as simply another asset to be financed, the bank is positioning the partnership as a broader ownership ecosystem covering charging, insurance, maintenance, lifestyle needs and future resale value.
Fulufhelo Mandane, Executive for Business Development and Strategic Partnerships at Absa, said the journey with BYD required the bank to rethink traditional vehicle finance. He explained that financial institutions initially approached electric vehicles and other emerging technologies with caution, but deeper engagement with BYD changed that perspective.
Absa became increasingly confident after understanding BYD’s ambitions for South Africa and its broader approach to the automotive market. Mandane said the company was not only focused on selling vehicles but was also considering long-term customer ownership, including residual values and the future used-vehicle market.
For Absa, this demonstrated that BYD was focused on more than vehicle sales. The manufacturer was also concerned about supporting customers throughout the ownership lifecycle and managing issues such as depreciation and future vehicle value.
Mandane believes BYD’s growing brand presence in South Africa has strengthened the opportunity for a dedicated finance solution. He said customers increasingly recognise the brand and understand the value proposition without requiring extensive explanation.
Affordability remains one of the biggest challenges facing EV adoption, but Mandane said BYD Finance is not simply about offering competitive interest rates. Instead, the model focuses on understanding the complete ownership experience before and after the vehicle leaves the showroom.
This includes considerations such as home charging infrastructure, solar and inverter solutions, insurance requirements and servicing needs. Electric vehicles have a different ownership profile, with different maintenance schedules and fewer mechanical components that typically require servicing.
Mandane highlighted how vehicles such as the BYD Shark can also form part of a customer's lifestyle. Features such as vehicle-to-load capability allow owners to power equipment while camping or travelling, creating additional value beyond traditional vehicle use. Absa is exploring how these lifestyle benefits can become part of a wider finance solution.
The objective is to reduce complexity for customers by allowing more elements of the EV ownership package to be included within the finance structure. This could include charging solutions or renewable energy equipment, allowing buyers to access a more complete mobility solution from the start.
Absa’s confidence in BYD was further strengthened through engagement with the company in China, where the bank studied its manufacturing operations as well as its finance and insurance approach. These visits helped address concerns around risk, future vehicle values and the long-term sustainability of EV ownership.
Mandane said protecting the customer remains central to the partnership, ensuring buyers are not placed into financial structures that do not suit their circumstances.
Looking ahead, Absa aims to grow alongside BYD as the brand expands in South Africa. Mandane said BYD’s ambition is to become a leading automotive brand, while Absa wants to be the financial partner supporting that growth.
He also believes future vehicle finance will need to adapt as customer preferences change. Some buyers may want shorter ownership cycles, while others may prefer not to own vehicles at all. As a result, Absa is exploring alternative models such as subscription-based vehicle financing.
While the bank remains open to additional partnerships, Mandane said the priority is finding the right strategic partners rather than simply increasing the number of agreements.
Through BYD Finance, Absa believes it has created a platform that can make EV ownership more accessible, practical and complete for South African customers as the country moves towards a new era of mobility.
