Chinese Carmakers Seek Their ‘Yaris Moment’ in Europe

Chinese automakers are redesigning vehicles for Europe as brands like BYD, MG and Chery chase long-term growth abroad.

Chinese automotive brands are intensifying their push into Europe, aiming to replicate Toyota’s breakthrough success with the Yaris by tailoring vehicles specifically for local buyers, according to a Reuters report.

For years, Chinese manufacturers largely exported models designed for domestic consumers, but fierce competition and shrinking margins at home have forced a strategic shift.

Companies such as BYD, Chery, Changan, MG and Hongqi are now investing heavily in export-focused designs, recognising that profitability abroad depends on meeting regional tastes rather than simply offering lower prices.

At the Beijing Auto Show, Hongqi unveiled a compact SUV created with European urban drivers in mind. Design chief Giles Taylor emphasised that European demand was the primary reason for the model’s existence. Similarly, BYD’s Dolphin G hatchback, due to launch in Europe in June, reflects the continent’s preference for smaller cars. Hatchbacks account for more than 40% of sales in parts of southern Europe, despite being a minor segment in China.

The numbers highlight the momentum. In Britain, Chinese brands doubled their market share in the first quarter of 2026 to 14.2%. Across Europe, their share nearly doubled last year to 6%, according to consultancy Inovev. Analysts argue that exports are becoming critical for survival, with more than 100 manufacturers competing in China and consolidation expected. Gartner’s Pedro Pacheco described the strategy as a “Yaris moment”, referencing Toyota’s success in designing a car specifically for Europe in 1999.

Yet challenges remain. Nissan’s Alfonso Albaisa noted that bold colours and entertainment features popular in China, such as in-car karaoke, may not resonate with European buyers. Instead, compact hatchbacks and restrained styling are increasingly prioritised. Chery is developing a Europe-focused hatchback under its Lepas brand, while MG is preparing the MG2 hatchback to appeal to local preferences.

Interestingly, some models are now debuting overseas before being released in China, underscoring the importance of global growth.

For Chinese automakers, the path to lasting success in Europe lies not just in competitive pricing but in understanding and adapting to the continent’s diverse consumer expectations.
